Control Arms Compaign during national water festival

During the three-day National Water Festival (04-06 November 2006) in Phnom Penh, Working Group for Weapons Reduction (WGWR) in collaboration with OXFAM GB had conducted a Control Arms Campaign with the two main activities: (1) Youth Campaign and (2) Participation of Boat Racers. The campaign aimed to (a) raise public awareness on ATT and on its victory at the 61st UN General Assembly, and (b) to educate the public about Cambodian arms law.

Before conducting the campaign, 60 university students had attended a ten-hour training workshop to help them better understand the issues surrounding small arms and light weapons control. They were also touch about conducting the planned campaign activities. During the three-day National Water Festival, these youth volunteers were divided into 10 groups (6 groups worked on arms laws and 4 groups on Arms Trade Treaty).

International Human Rights Day

 

On International Human Rights Day, Sunday, 10 December 2006, the Working Group for Weapons Reduction (WGWR) in collaboration with thirty-two campaigners from other organizations, organized a campaign “Prevention of Human Rights Violations Committed With Small Arms” in Phnom Penh.

The campaigners raised two main topics: the Principle of Prevention of Human Right Violation committed with Small Arms and the Code of Conduct of Law Enforcement Officers. There were 317 persons attending in the 33 meetings: 30 Sangkat councilors, 17 village chiefs, 4 Sangkat staffs, 188 administrative policemen, 50 policemen of district inspection, 23 PMs, and 5 civilians.
