The Global Conference
‘’From Reaction to Prevention: Civil Society Forging Partnerships to Prevent Violent Conflict and Build Peace’’
19-21 July 2005, UN Headquarters, New York

GPPC

As a member of the South East Asia Regional Delegation, WGWR was represented at the Global Conference by the new Executive Deputy Director Mrs. Peou Vanna and the Chairwoman of WGWR’s Board of Directors Mrs. Prok Vanny. Their participation was financially supported by the Church World Services (CWS).

Over 900 people from 118 countries met during the Global Conference which is a result of a three year initiative called Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC) focusing on the role of civil society in the prevention of armed conflict and peace building. This initiative is a response to the UN report on the Prevention on Armed Conflict from June 2001. The key aim of the conference was to adopt a global and regional policy change agenda aimed at achieving a shift from reaction to prevention of violent conflict and obtaining initial commitments and inputs from civil society organizations, the UN, regional bodies, and governments to that effect. Another aim was to develop and adopt a plan for implementing GPPAC’s Global Action Agenda for the Prevention of Violent Conflict.
