The Working Group for Weapons
Reduction is not only active in promoting the reduction of small arms
and light weapons at national and regional levels, but also at international
level. As a member of IANSA since 2001 acting as their focal point for
South East Asia, WGWR has participated in the Second UN Biennial Meeting
of States on Small Arms 11-14 July in New York. WGWR also participated
in the first BMS in 2003. The objective of these meetings is to follow
up the different states implementation of the UN Program of Action on
Small Arms (UNPoA ) since its adoption in 2001. Cambodia has signed this
political binding document. WGWR’s role in these meetings is to
support IANSA’s efforts to lobby the Governments’ implementation
of the UNPoA, to share our experiences on small arms in Cambodia, and
to network and learn from others. For the future, WGWR is striving to
take a more active role as an IANSA-member at regional level in South
East Asia on small arms and light weapons. In addition, WGWR intends to
actively support the preparation process within IANSA of the Review Conference
of the PoA in New York in July 2006.
